When Chinese stinky tofu and century egg meet western cheese! These extraordinary meatballs will make your skirt fly up! Not conventional at all, have a strong and delicious flavor! What makes them even better? Two dipping sauces made using Kaya all natural savory coconut jam!

When east meets west and fall in love. The story of my life basically: a 100% western girl which 10 years ago decides to move to China and literally falls in love with it. Born and raised in the south of Italy in a very traditional western-thinking family, I somehow found pictures of myself as a child wearing asian style hats, which not even my parents have a clue where it came from or how it got into our house, to then at the age of 21 decided to start studying Chinese and moving to Beijing first and Shanghai later.

All in all I have spent more than 1/3 of my life in Asia. This years spent away from home have radically changed me: my mindset, the way I look at life, my values, the things I treasure and those that have no value for me. Of course all this came at price. The price of not having been able to spend much time with my family and friends back home, if not for a few weeks here and there over the holidays; the price of being now somehow Italian by citizenship but also so not much Italian anymore in my way of thinking and behaving; the price of living in a country which I love deeply but which, however will never treat me as if I belong here – thus I will never feel like I do. Expat life is though, let’s face it. But it also enable us to live such extraordinary experiences, traveling in breathtaking places, meeting  amazing people and getting to try weird/exotic foods!

One of the thing I had always refused to try was stinky tofu. Its strong smell made me wanna puke!  But after so many years of living in China, I told myself I should stop being such a baby and try it! So I did and let me tell you, I LIKED IT!!! So lesson learnt: never say never in life!

Today recipe is a fusion dish, which brings to your table unconventional meatballs made with ground pork, cheese, stinky tofu and…wait for it….century egg!!! All served with 2 dipping sauces made using Kaya’s all natural coconut jam.

If you remember I featured Kaya’s products in 2 of my recipes: Mango Coconut Smoothie Bowl and the Seedy Quinoa Bars  .

This time I am using her savory coconut jam, made with salty egg!

The jam is not overwhelming in favor, instead it’s quite mild, which makes it so versatile and easy to use in many different ways.

Ingredients (serves 2):

  • 300 g ground lean pork
  • 1 century egg
  • 150 g stinky tofu
  • 1 tbsp chopped cilantro
  • salt and pepper
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup tapioca flour
  • 1 tbsp curry powder
  • vegetable oil to fry

for the dipping sauce 1

  • 1/4 cup Kaya’s all natural savory coconut jam
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/2 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp chopped cilantro

for dipping sauce 2

  • 1/4 cup Kaya’s all natural savory coconut jam
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder

Let’s start from the meatballs

grab your stinky tofu and century egg

chop up both into small cubes

and mix them with the ground pork, pepper, salt, mozzarella cheese and chopped cilantro

Then using your hands, roll up the mixture into balls

and coat them into tapioca flour. This makes them very crispy on the outside but soft in the inside.

Fry the meatballs into hot vegetable oil

then place them on kitchen paper to absorb the extra oil

and dust them with curry powder!

For the dipping sauce, in a bowl combine mayo, sesame oil, soy sauce, minced cilantro and Kaya’s all natural savory coconut jam.

In an other bowl combine ketchup, chili powder, minced cilantro and Kaya’s all natural savory coconut jam

Mix up and there you have 2 delicious dipping sauces!

Serve your meatballs nice and hot!

The melted mozzarella and curry powder will mild up the flavor of the stinky tofu while the century egg will give your meatballs a very special texture

Dip them into your preferred dipping sauce: spice or mild.

Enjoy!
